We need two exceptional people to join us for 9-12 months and make a real difference to our communications and to other people’s lives.

We are looking for people with strong writing and editing skills who are able to coordinate and work on both online and printed materials.

Working within the Editorial Team of the Creative Communications Section, you will have particular responsibility for some specialist materials (either campaign or emergencies/fundraising).

You will need to be a good team worker with excellent communication skills who enjoys working in a busy and creative environment and with a knowledge of online tools.

A real interest in overseas development, campaigning or fundraising would be an advantage and some understanding of the Catholic community in England and Wales would be useful.

Picture Editor

Main Responsibilities

Picture editors are generally freelance and erm are used to find images which will ba appropriate and relevant for the articles being published. They also have to liase with clients make sure that erm pictures aren't already under copywright, keep a record of and store all images that have been used and commission pictures as well as erm coming up with fees.

Qualifications

they need a degree in erm visual arts and erm it is essential for them to have it skills.

Experience

internships, voluntary work, carrotts, condomd, fanny pack, butter collinson's fanny. they also need to gain experience through internships and make contacts in the industry

Staff Writer

Main responsibilities

Staff writers are permanant employees of a particilat media organisation. they research into the subjects on whivch they are writing using databases, police records reports and conductiong interviews. staff writers also work with designers to ensure that atricles are aesthetically pleasing. although editors are employed staff writers are required to do some of their own editing for their owna articles and for others.

Qualifications

Staff writers tend to have a degree in either journalism, communications or english.

similarly to eveach other role ecperience within the industry as volunteers can assist in gaining a good job.

Features Editor

Main Responsibilities

the main role of the feature editror it to ensure that the articles featured are newsworthy and interesting whilst also fulfilling the brief of the editor. they hold feature meetings where they generate topics and manage staff and freelance writers. they also send briefs to writers whilst also researching and compiling their own features whilst rewriting andcopyediting those of others. they work alongside the art department and attend the editorial meetings to ensure profile of the magazine is maintained and kept to a high standard.

Qualifications

The qualifications required to fulfil this role is a degree in journalism, although it is not required a post graduate degree is valued within the industry and employers. as with the role of photographer experience effects the formal qualifications an employer will be looking for.

Photographer

Main Responsibilities

A photographer sets up photo shoots and captures images which aare relavant to what the editor thinks is suitable for a particular article/edition of the magazine. they go to editorial meetings where they can gain a full understanding of what the editor requires from them and determine whether to use digital or standard cameras as well as making sure lighting is correct for the shoot.

Qualifications

the formal formal qualifications required for this role are lower than expected for an editorial role and have a wide range dependant on experience and publication. they range from city and guilds and betec qualifications to undergraduate degrees.

Experience

photographers may take part in volunteering in publications and by submitting their work for no fee as an ameture to gain status within the industry.

Art director

Main Responsibilities

Art directors come up with original ideas, storyboards and sketches for the magazine, they oversee the entire design departmant and work with picture editors and editors to create a unified look for the magazine. art directord base their designs on visual concepts, they also help guide the photographers and writers to fit in with the concept they have created.

Qualifications

Art directors usually have a degree from an art school which consists of photography graphica and art. it is also essential for them to be able to use apple mac's as they will need to be able to use software such as Adobe, go live, Photoshop and creative suite.

Experience

As for Editors the art director will usually have gained experienc ethrough a university or college magazine as well as learning the role through internships and promotion.

Editor

Main Responsibilities

Editors come up with the main ideas and shape the the themes of the articles to follow the brand and determine the look and feel of the magazine. some of the articles are written by the editor but they also approach people who can complete a brief more effectively than themselves. The hosting of editorial meetings where ideas from the whole team are discussed is important in the task of producing a high quality publication. at the editorial meetings all the sub-editors and other heads of department will be present to generate ideas and divide up the work in the best way possible.

Qualifications

Editors will require a degree or (preferably) a masters in journalism to fulfil this role to the highest standard.

Experience

Students can get experience by being part of a college or university magazine where they can progress up throught the ranks until the gain editorial status, having experienced a range of different roles within the publication. This will allow a student to understand the full workings of how a magazine is put together and show enthusiasam in the job as this experience will be untertaken voluntarily. an internship is an extension of the university/college magaazine but is actually within the media industry itself and may involve commission for work. Most editors will start at the bottom and work their way up.
